What about kids' toothpaste?

When choosing toothpaste for children, it can be hard to know what criteria to use. With so many different options, such as packaging with children's favorite characters, grape flavor, apple flavor, dentist recommended, and cavity prevention, it's easy to get lost wondering which one you really want to use for your child.

Although we know that it is important to develop the habit of brushing teeth from an early age in order to maintain healthy teeth, we often hear parents say things like, "I have to struggle every day with my child who is thrashing around and holding them down while brushing their teeth," or "I think the time to brush my teeth may not be long, but I give up when my child doesn't want to brush their teeth."

It's important for children to understand the refreshing feeling that comes from brushing their teeth, but first we want to help make brushing fun by choosing a toothpaste that is comfortable to use and that the child themselves will want to use.

What are some flavors that kids like so they'll enjoy brushing their teeth?

We all love sweet scents and flavors, don't we? The gentle sweetness of Davids Whitening Toothpaste's strawberry watermelon is popular with adults who want to relax, but it's also very popular with small children. My two-year-old daughter loves it so much that she asks for more toothpaste. If I'm not careful, she'll suck the toothpaste off the toothbrush before I start brushing. It's a relief that she wants toothpaste and says "I'm going to brush my teeth!" on her own. Davids' flavor and scent are made from natural ingredients without artificial flavors, so you can safely let even small children use it.

Also, toothpastes that contain sulfate foaming agents (such as sodium lauryl sulfate) can cause a tingling sensation on the tongue even if they have a sweet scent. The tongue contains cells called taste buds that sense taste. If your tongue feels tingly, it may be that the taste buds have been damaged by the stimulation of the sulfate foaming agents. If your child dislikes toothpaste even though it has a sweet scent, you may want to check the ingredients.

What is the usability that you want to focus on for small children?

By choosing toothpaste that produces less foam, it is easier for even small children to rinse, and you can brush every nook and cranny while keeping a close eye on the inside of the mouth when finishing brushing. It is also important that the toothpaste is a smooth paste that does not abrade the teeth, so it can be used when the soft baby teeth start to grow in (from around 6 months old). Gel-type toothpaste is recommended for practicing brushing, but once a child has a full set of teeth and can eat a variety of foods, it is recommended to switch to a paste-type toothpaste that can thoroughly remove plaque.

This is a bit technical, but the abrasiveness of toothpaste is rated by its RDA (Dentin Abrasive Power) value. An RDA value of 250 or less is recommended for adults, and half that for children. Davids Whitening Toothpaste is a smooth paste with an RDA of 100, so it will not damage tooth enamel even if children use it daily.

Can tooth decay be prevented without fluoride?
It is said that the first step in preventing cavities is to brush your teeth thoroughly. You may also be wondering if it contains other ingredients that have preventive effects. Davids Whitening Toothpaste contains xylitol, which is derived from birch trees and has the effect of preventing cavities. Xylitol has the effect of weakening and reducing the activity of Streptococcus mutans (also known as caries bacteria), making it difficult for plaque to form, and promoting the remineralization of teeth.

Recently, a substance called nano-hydroxyapatite has been attracting attention as an alternative to fluoride. It has been proven to promote the remineralization of tooth enamel as effectively as fluoride, or even more so, and is considered to be biocompatible with no known health risks. Once your child gets a little older and can use the mint flavor, we recommend switching to Davids Whitening Toothpaste (sensitive), which contains nano-hydroxyapatite.

I'm not yet good at gargling, but can I use this?

Until teeth start to grow, you can keep your baby's mouth clean by wiping it with gauze soaked in water after feeding. After that, it is recommended that you start brushing your baby's teeth with a toothbrush from about 6 months of age, when baby teeth start to grow in.

There is no clear standard for when to start using toothpaste, but in order to make it a habit, it may be a good idea to start using toothpaste at the same time as starting to use a toothbrush. For small children who cannot rinse their mouths properly, choose toothpaste that contains ingredients that are safe even if swallowed.

Davids Whitening Toothpaste is made from 100% natural ingredients (food grade) and is perfect for your child's first toothpaste. If you are concerned about toothpaste remaining in your mouth, such as when you are unable to rinse your mouth properly, you can wipe it off with gauze soaked in water to make it refreshing.
