EARTH DAY 2024
April 22nd is EARTH DAY
It feels like this day has finally started to become more widely known in recent years, but do you know what kind of day EARTH DAY is?
▪What is EARTH DAY?
Hearing the name, some people may have a vague idea of what it means: a day to think about the global environment? A day to participate in eco-friendly events and movements? EARTH DAY was established about 50 years ago, on April 22, 1970. It was born when U.S. Senator G. Nelson declared April 22 to be "Earth Day." It is also called "International Mother Earth Day." There are no specific rules or regulations, and it is a day when everyone, as a global citizen, can freely show their intention to protect the global environment in their own way, regardless of nationality, gender, religion, etc.
▪What should I do specifically?
Anything is fine. Think about the global environment and discuss it with your family and friends, pick up trash in your neighborhood, stop using your car on this day and walk or ride a bike. Some people even climb mountains to feel nature. Anyone who wants to do something for the global environment can take action freely within their limits. Whether you are someone who thinks about the environment and takes various actions in your daily life, or someone who thinks about it but doesn't know what to do specifically, this day is an opportunity to talk to someone about the global environment and the future, such as "Today is Earth Day, do you know what it is?" In Tokyo, "Earth Day Tokyo" is held on the weekends before and after this day, mainly in Yoyogi Park. At this event in Yoyogi Park, various companies and shops that support Earth Day set up stalls, workshops, talks, and live performances by artists are held. The weather is nice during this time of year, so I'm sure you'll enjoy just taking a look around while taking a walk.
▪It's so easy to do
In honor of this day, we will be focusing on brands and items that are providing great support and working towards the environment and a better future. Everyday items and cosmetics that we use every day. What kind of thoughts do the manufacturers have when they launch their brands and produce them? I think that many people don't have a chance to find out. Knowing this often broadens your options. With so many options available, we would be happy to share with you some choices that will help the environment and a better future. Items from the brands we are introducing this time will be available for purchase at 10% off in stores and online during this period. If there are any that interest you, please take this opportunity to try them out.
Moon Bath
This is a bath care brand from Colorado that incorporates moon cycles and Ayurveda. The brand itself is a member of 1% for the Planet . This time, we will focus on three items that will help support various organizations when purchased.
⋆1% for the Planet …A global network of over 5,000 companies worldwide, with the aim of encouraging businesses that contribute to protecting the natural environment. A non-profit organization ( NPO ) established in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Matthews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies.
・Sacred Smoke A slightly unusual incense set with a charcoal disc for purification (a blend of white sage, lavender, frankincense and copal resin) . When you sprinkle the incense on the lit charcoal disc, the herbs burn slowly, and the copal resin incense melts and smoke rises. It is a scent that relieves depression, purifies the space and negative energy, and provides healing. When you purchase this, you can donate $ 1 to the Native American Rights Fund, which provides legal support for indigenous sovereignty, natural resource protection, and education.
・Growing Body Oil
A gender-neutral fragrance made by blending sunflower seed oil and jojoba seed oil, which have high antioxidant properties, with sandalwood and cypress. It is recommended as a body oil after a bath, as well as an abhyanga oil before and after bath time. It also has a grounding effect and is a reassuring oil that thoroughly nourishes the skin. For a future where everyone can live comfortably, by purchasing this product, you can donate $ 1 to Annunciation House , an organization that was established in 1978 to support immigrants, homeless people, and economically disadvantaged people at the border.
・Nasty Woman Botancal Bath Tea
Botanical bath tea, a blend of Damiana, Rose, Saffron, etc., which enhance femininity, will relax your mind and make you feel liberated. Put half a cup of bath tea in 1L of hot water and let it steep for 15 to 20 minutes. Pour the soaked botanical bath tea into the bathtub for an elegant bath time. It is also recommended as a reward time for yourself. By purchasing this product, you can donate $ 2 to Planned Parenthood ( a non-profit organization for sexual and reproductive health services ) . This organization, which is also a member of the International Family Federation, provides services such as abortion surgery, contraceptive prescriptions, and sexually transmitted disease treatment based on individual rights, while also conducting academic research and sex education.
▪AXIOLOGY
A zero-waste, vegan cosmetics brand from the United States. This brand is making a difference in the beauty industry with its sustainably produced packaging and contents. The beauty industry generates 120 billion units of packaging waste every year ( most of which is plastic ) , and the brand has abolished the use of all plastic. The founder, who lived in Bali before launching the brand, witnessed the pollution in the city and beaches, and turned Bali's trash into beautiful packaging ( outer boxes ) , providing stable work and fair wages to women in Bali. The 3-in-1 makeup balm (both 3-piece set and single color), which is popular as a gift, is the target product. It can be used as eyeliner, lipstick, cheek, and depending on the color, it can also be used as highlighter! It is a truly multi-purpose and excellent item.
▪naure
This brand produces tamanu oil, which is produced on Ikema Island, a small remote island located north of Miyako Island, Okinawa, and is produced from the harvesting of raw seeds to processing and pressing. By producing on Ikema Island, they have witnessed issues such as depopulation and aging, and have created a small job of "cracking tamanu nuts," which even old ladies who can no longer work in the fields can enjoy. In addition, naure collects only naturally fallen nuts one by one, and is made without taking resources from other places or damaging the existing nature. This time, all three products available at It's so easy (Tamanu Face Mist, Pure Tamanu Oil, and Cleansing Balm (Solid Soap)) are included. The Face Mist has a great scent! It is a blend of tea tree, Indian lemongrass, mandarin orange, and other ingredients, and has a refreshing scent that makes you want to use it as a refresher mist even when it's not skin care time in the coming season. Pure Tamanu Oil and Cleansing Balm are also recommended as rescue items when you have rough skin, as they quickly soothe acne and breakouts.
▪THE HUMBLE CO.
A Swedish oral care brand that produces bamboo toothbrushes and plant-based toothbrushes. All products are vegan. Developed by dentists, they are FDA- certified and cruelty-free. They are manufactured and packaged in an environmentally friendly manner. They also established the Humble Smile Foundation, which works to protect the dental health of children around the world who have difficulty in getting oral care ( India, Ethiopia, Nepal, Mozambique, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and dozens of other countries) through tooth brushing instruction and medical treatment. In order to support this activity , THE HUMBLE CO. donates not only its products but also a portion of its sales, and to date, it has donated over hundreds of thousands of products and 6 million SEK (approximately 74 million yen in Japanese yen).
・Bamboo Toothbrush
Of the many items available, this time we will be looking at the brand's signature item, the Bamboo Toothbrush (for adults and children). The brand has undergone thorough safety testing and developed a sophisticated design, with the brush cut designed to be excellent at removing plaque and easy to brush with, and the handle curved based on ergonomics. The handle is made from biodegradable bamboo, and the bristles are made from BPA (bisphenol A)-free nylon 6, which is made from approximately 40% plant-based ingredients, and neither material releases harmful toxins when burned. It's an easy item to adopt as a step towards helping the environment.
▪CODINA
This organic skincare brand originates from France and is particular about the soil and raw materials, and creates products that respect traditional manufacturing methods, based on the idea of Dr. Michel Pobeda, a vegetable oil doctor, that "everything you put on your skin and eat should be natural." The brand is also working on social contribution activities to protect employment for women in Africa, such as partnering with a support group in Burkina Faso, West Africa, where shea butter, the focus item this time, is produced, to provide work for local women harvesting shea nuts.
