Introducing Q&A about Shodai-yaki Ichisakigama pottery
JAPAN TRADITIONAL CRAFTS WEEK is currently in full swing. Many customers are visiting It's so easy while touring the stores participating in the event.
Following on from our previous interview , this time we asked Yamaguchi a number of questions about the important points to consider when choosing tableware.
[Q&A below]
It's so easy: Next, I would like to ask you about the points you consider when choosing the works to be featured on It's so easy. First, let's start with some frequently asked questions in a Q&A format.
Q: Can we use the microwave and dishwasher to put things like teacups, mugs, and plates that we use every day?
A: The black glaze tableware series contains iron in the glaze.
Microwaves are not allowed as they react with electronic devices. Other than that, there are no problems. As for dishwashers, the rattling vibrations during washing can cause some products to chip due to their thin edges. We rate dishwashers △ and recommend hand washing as the safest method of care.
Q: Do teapots made from clay that contains iron have any special features, such as being able to extract iron like iron kettles?
A: We don't advertise that it will extract iron like an iron kettle, but people say that when you drink from a Kodai-yaki teapot, the water becomes thicker and rounder.
Q: This is the most accessible cup series. Are there any drinks that go well with it?
A: It goes well with any cup, be it tea, coffee, or alcohol! I hope you will choose the cup that suits your mood that day.
If I had to say, it would probably be a mug. Mugs are particular about the handle. The handle design of a standard round mug is usually slippery and difficult to hold.
For this reason, we made the handle wider so that your fingers can hook securely at the bottom. * (Put your index finger in, place your thumb on it, and support it with your middle finger.)
The size of the holes has been calculated so that they are neither too big nor too small and fit easily. I'd like you to actually pick it up and feel it for yourself.
Q: Are the glazes made from natural ingredients?
A: The main raw materials are natural minerals (feldspar), straw ash, and wood ash.
It is mostly made up of natural minerals, but also contains some chemically produced ash.
The natural straw ash we make ourselves is made by burning straw in our fields once a year and refining it to use as an ingredient in glazes.
If you burn straw and soak it in water for about six months, changing the water every day, the scum will come out .
The natural straw ash that we make ourselves contains iron from rice paddies, which is a component that is not found in chemical straw ash and is what gives it its unique color.
Yamaguchi-san gave us a fascinating interview and Q&A about his products. His works will be exhibited and sold at the It's so easy store from October 29th (Friday) to November 11th (Thursday).
We hope this will be helpful when you are unsure about which tableware to choose.
We look forward to your visit.
